Simulating a Full Screen Dos Session

When running DOS apps using the Windows Client, you can't run in a full screen mode and get a full screen. Running in a full screen mode gives you a DOS app that fills up only half of your monitor. Here is a solution. Add to the screen fonts and run the app in a DOS Window. Here are the instructions on how to set it up.

Simulation of a DOS Full screen session details:

Here is the step by step based on Winframe 1.7 but should be similar on other versions of Citrix.

Server Side: (Administrator)

Install the appropriate bitmap font (also known as a raster font). You can get the correct font from
http://www.uwe-sieber.de/dosfon_e.html. The font that you want to install is called NewDOS. The registered version has the following sizes all wrapped up in this one font:

  • 13 pt 8 x 17
  • 17 pt 10 x 22
  • 21 pt 12 x 28
  • 22 pt 12 x 29
  • 24 pt 14 x 32
  • 24 pt 14 x 33

Logon to the Winframe server as Administrator. Go to Control Panel\Fonts\Add. A new window will popup with the caption Add Fonts. Select the path to the font file (NewDOS). You should see a name under List of Fonts: New Dos Fullscreen. Select this one and click OK. You now have more sizes available for the users in DOS sessions.

Client Side: (Users)

Go into Citrix Remote Application Manager (Win32 Version). Choose Entry\Properties. Set the Window Properties to Window Size to Full Screen (Default?). Start the connection and logon. Start the Dos Application as a Dos Window, Do ALT+ENTER if not already windowed. Click on the upper left corner to expose Properties then select it. You should see four tabs:

  • General Settings
  • Font Selection
  • Screen Size
  • Position and Screen Colors

Select Font Selection. Choose Raster Fonts and you should see a listing of sizes ranging from 4 x 6 to 14 x 33. Highlight the 8 x 17 size if you are using a monitor with the screen resolution of 640 x 480 or... Highlight the 10 x 22 size if you are using a monitor with the screen resolution of 800 x 600. Im not sure which size to choose for higher resolutions but I know one of the sizes should work.

Next go to the General settings tab and select Display options as Window. Next go to the Screen Size & Position tab. Where it says Window position, uncheck Let system position Window and set Left to -4 and set Top to -4 then click OK. A dialog box will popup that says Apply Properties and choose Save properties for future window with the same title and then click OK.

You user should now have a very usable DOS session that is close to the appearance of a full screen.

Note that 8 x 18 & 10 X 23 would be even closer to the appearance of a full screen, but 8 x 17 & 10 x 22 are very acceptable
