Wyse Winterminals and Windows Screen Savers hang servers

If you are using Wyse winterminals here is a tip that might solve some of your hung winstation problems.

Wyse suggests to use the screen save mode in the machines bios and not the Windows Nt Screen savers. When we set up our default profiles for some reason the screen saver was set to blank the screen at 20 minutes. I dont know if this is a default, but I certainly dont remember setting it this way for all five of my servers so it must be. At the 20 minute mark of inactivity the winterm would popup a wowexec error message. I am assuming this would cause a memory leak on the server and performance would decline sharply until it was unacceptable. The hung session would not always disconnect using winstation administration or reset winsta # from the dos prompt. The only cure was to reboot.
